“My son, Teddy, has been receiving adaptive horseback riding therapy for the past two and a half years (starting at age 4) for his special needs. Prior to this therapy, his Occupational Therapist said there was “nothing more that could be done to help him”. Teddy did not feel pain, could not sense hunger or fullness, could not sense hot or cold, and could not sense when he needed to use the bathroom. Within the first three months of starting this therapy, he could feel/sense all of these things! I don’t pretend to understand the magic behind it, or why it works – all we care about is – IT DOES WORK!
But, it’s not just about the horse-back riding therapy that works. The staff working at H.A.R.T. (administrative, therapists, and volunteers) have made this a successful journey for our family. Working with their staff for the past several years on my son’s needs has made them part of our extended family. We trust them implicitly with Teddy, who has a sensory processing disorder, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and high-functioning autism. Sue, Amber, and all of the volunteers are always extraordinarily patient with Teddy – which he needs. The staff are highly trained and very skilled at what they do – and most of all – they love doing it and it shows! This isn’t just a “business” for them… and we aren’t just a “number”. H.A.R.T, staff took the time to get to know us. I would HIGHLY recommend H.A.R.T. to ANY family considering horse-back riding therapy. You will not find another organization with as much experience, skill and love for what they do, as the staff at H.A.R.T. Safety is key for them (as it should be!) And what I think is most touching for our family is that they find a way to make this therapy available to EVERYONE who can benefit from it. They go above and beyond… and we are so glad we found them!” Roberta M. Lincoln – Parent
“HART is one of the most beneficial fun therapies that we do for Josie. The staff is well trained and a very compassionate group of people. We are so thankful for this program!” Joleen Magill – Parent
“My youngest daughter, Poppy, was born with a neurogenetic disorder called Angelman Syndrome. Among other things, A.S. presents with low muscle tone, sensory sensitivities, and issues with balance. By the age of one, she attended weekly physical and occupational therapy sessions to help address these areas. Although she made gains, they were minute compared to the changes we witnessed once she started therapeutic horseback riding. Through weekly riding sessions, she gained considerable core strength and balance. The experienced staff and volunteers of HART gave Poppy the greatest gift through their dedication and knowledge. Just after her third birthday she took her first independent steps! We are forever grateful to HART and the miracles they help to create.” Megan Newell – Parent
“I’m so blessed to be able to have my boys ride at HART! The employees and volunteers are amazing with my children and the horses are calm and patient during my son’s good days and bad. For my autistic non-verbal seven year old, riding at HART has become the highlight of his week. He knows it’s riding day and anxiously awaits the time to go, getting his shoes and waiting by the door even hours in advance. He is almost instantly calmed once on the horse, as the rocking motion seems to provide an ability to center himself like nothing else. After a year he has started touching the horse and connecting to the environment around him. HART has helped him learn control over his environment by what he says and does. He has shown an increase in communication through actions and words, body control, awareness of animals, nature and other people. HART has gone out of their way to ensure a safe, caring, learning, fun, and special place for those individuals whose needs go beyond the norm. Thank you HART!” Jill Renfro – Parent
“HART is a weekly beacon of light and hope for Isla in a sea of challenges she navigates daily. The fun hippotherapy sessions give her a great core workout, as they help improve her strength and balance! At HART, Isla finds complete acceptance and a sense of success as the loving staff and volunteers embrace and encourage her, praising her accomplishments, which feeds her confidence and nourishes her soul. She always leaves relaxed, yet with a renewed and energized spirit. She loves and always looks forward to seeing her friends at HART… 2 and 4- legged alike!” Jill Tachell – Parent
